From the buzzing cultural hub of Bangkok, we journey overland to the truly incredible Cambodian town of Siem Reap and its magnificent world-famous Khmer ruins of Angkor Wat, some of the world's most awe-inspiring ancient temples. We will learn all about the sad history of the 1970s genocide in Phnom Penh and enjoy a homestay near the Mekong in Kratie, before crossing into the beautiful country of Laos. We will travel to the stunning island of Don Khon and the 10th-century temple of Wat Pho near Pakse, before arriving in the exhilirating outdoor-activity capital of Vang Vieng. Next we head to the stunning Buddhist town of Luang Prabang and its famous Kuang Si waterfalls. From here we drive through the beautiful Laotian countryside to Luang Namtha, a wonderfully-located village on the edge of the Nam Tha National Park, then overland across rugged landscape of south China to the natural rock labyrinth of the Shilin Stone Forest. We then head to the delightful city of Kunming, from where we will travel through the stunning landscapes of southern China and the fantastic town of Dali. Crossing into Myanmar, we explore the tribal villages of Shan state and the magnificent former royal capital of Mandalay! We'll journey past many incredible cave temples and ancient pagodas to the archaeological wonder of Bagan, explore the stunning hills of Kalaw and visit the floating markets of Inle Lake, before overlanding to the incredible city of Yangon and its iconic Shwedagon Pagoda. From the incredible city of Yangon we head to the phenomenal Buddhist pilgrimage site of Mount Kyaiktiyo and its gravity-defying Golden Rock, before heading through southern Myanmar. We visit the breathtaking mushroom-shaped temple rock of Kyauk Kalap and the serene beaches of Maungmagan, then overland over the mountains into Thailand. We will visit the infamous Bridge over the River Kwai en route to the incredible Thai capital of Bangkok. Join us on this unforgettable Asian overlanding experience!

Itinerary

01

Day 1: Bangkok

Border Information: If joining in Bangkok, you will most likey enter Thailand at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport (IATA code: BKK).

Today will be a free day to explore the incredible city of Bangkok until the evening. There will be a group meeting today at 6:00pm - please look out for a note from your tour leader on arrival at the joining hotel with more information about this important meeting.

Please note that many of the options listed below will only be possible for those with extra time in Bangkok before the start of your trip with us - please contact the Sales team if you would like to book pre-tour accommodation with us to have extra time exploring Bangkok.

In Bangkok we will stay in a centrally-located hotel with good facilities.

Day 2: Aranyaprathet

Today we start our journey with a drive out of the capital and through the Thai countryside to the border town of Aranyaprathet. There is a large border market in the north of the town that is interesting to visit.

In Aranyaprathet we will stay in a basic guesthouse.

Day 3: Siem Reap

Border Information: Exit Thailand at Aranyaprathet, enter Cambodia at Poipet.

This morning we will cross the border into Cambodia, proceeding through the Thai immigration office then crossing the bridge by foot to the Cambodian immigration office. Once all of the border formalities are complete, we rejoin our truck and continue to Siem Reap, home to the Angkor Wat temple complex.

In Siem Reap we will stay in a good quality guesthouse.

Estimated Drive Time - 3-4 hours.

Please note that due to constantly changing import restrictions we are sometimes unable to take our overland truck into Cambodia. We therefore may use a privately chartered bus for this section of the trip - this is a well-tested contingency using comfortable vehicles, and will not affect the itinerary.

Day 4: Angkor Wat

Today we will have an early start for our included guided trip to the incredible and awe-inspiring 12th-Century Khmer temples of Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom. We will have a full day to explore the vast site and then watch the sunset over the temples, a truly magical experience.

Day 5: Siem Reap

Today we will have a free day to explore Siem Reap and to take part in the many optional activites available here. Many people choose to return to the temples at Angkor Wat and spend some more time independently exploring further, however others choose to stay in the lively town of Siem Reap and its immediate surroundings.

Day 6: Kompong Thom

This morning we have a fairly short drive to Sambor Prei Kuk, Cambodia's most impressive group of pre-Angkorian monuments. We will have plenty of time to explore the ruins before driving on to Kompong Thom, where we spend the night in the house of a local family.

The accommodation is basic and some bathrooms are outside, but experiencing traditional home-cooked food and spending time with people of the village is truly a special experience.

Day 7: Phnom Penh

Today we will have breakfast with our hosts at the Komphong Thom homestay, and then drive on to Cambodia's capital, Phnom Penh.

In Phnom Penh we will stay in a local guesthouse.

Day 8: Phnom Penh

This morning we will have a very moving visit to the infamous Tuol Sleng Prison Museum and the Killing Fields Memorial. We will then return to Phnom Penh and have a free afternoon to explore Cambodia's capital.

Day 9-10: Kratié

Today we continue our journey to Kratie, situated in the northeast of Cambodia on the banks of the Mekong River. The area is famous for its sunsets, and we hope to spot Irrawaddy dolphins swimming in the river!

In Kratie we will stay with local families in their homes. The accommodation is fairly basic but this will be a fantastic local experience.

Day 11: Don Khon

Border Information: Exit Cambodia at Dom Kralor, enter Laos at Voeung Kam.

Today we have an early start to cross the border into southern Laos. If we have been using a chartered bus in Cambodia, we will rejoin our overland truck and meet our co-driver again once through the border. We will then continue to Si Phan Don, otherwise known as the 4,000 Islands. We will transfer by boat to one of the larger islands in the area, Don Khon, and visit the Li Phi waterfalls.

We will also have some free time where we have the option to explore the island on bicycles.

In Don Khon we will stay in a local guesthouse.

Day 12: Pakse

This morning we will have some more free to further explore the islands before continuing our journey to Pakse. This afternoon we will have an included visit to the magnificent Wat Phou, a ruined Khmer temple complex located at the base of Mount Phu Kao.

In Pakse we will stay in a local guesthouse.

Day 13: Thakhek

Today we have a full day's drive to the area of Thakhek.

Tonight we will wild camp near to Thakhek.

Estimated Drive Time - 6-7 hours.

Day 14-15: Vang Vieng

Today we will have a full day's drive to the town of Vang Vieng.

Estimated Drive Time - 8-9 hours.

On the following day we will have a free day in Vang Vieng to relax, enjoy the stunning landscapes surrounding the village and take part of the many optional activities available in the area. Popular activities here include trekking, renting a bicycle or rock climbing.

In Vang Vieng we will stay in a local guesthouse.

Day 16-17: Luang Prabang

Today we will travel via the spectacular mountainous roads of northern Laos to the beautiful city of Luang Prabang.

Estimated Drive Time - 5-6 hours.

On the following day we have a short drive to a small Hmong hill tribe village called Ban Long Lao. This Hmong village is where we begin our 4-hour trek to the stunning Kuang Si waterfalls. This afternoon you have time to relax and swim in the many warm turquoise pools. We will return to Luang Prabang in the late afternoon.

In Luang Prabang we will stay in a comfortable local guesthouse.

Day 18: Luang Prabang

Border Information: If joining in Luang Prabang, you will most likey enter Laos at Luang Prabang International Airport (IATA code: LPQ).

Today will be a free day to explore the beautiful city of Luang Prabang until the evening. There will be a group meeting today at 6:00pm - please look out for a note from your tour leader on arrival at the joining hotel with more information about this important meeting.

Day 19-21: Luang Namtha

This morning we drive through the stunning countryside of northern Laos to the small town of Luang Namtha.

In Luang Namtha we will have two free days to enjoy the many optional activities available in and around Luang Namtha and the nearby Nam Ha National Park. Popular activities here include hiking and trekking in the National Park.

In Luang Namtha we will stay in a local guesthouse.

Day 22: Mohan

Border Information: Exit Laos at Boten, enter China at Mengla.

This morning we will cross the border into China and begin our journey through the southern Chinese region of Xishuangbanna. We spend the next few days overlanding through this beautiful area, stopping off at towns, villages and local markets along the way.

Tonight we will stay in the border town of Mengla while your crew finalise the paperwork to enter our truck into China.

Day 23: Xishuangbanna

Today will be a full day's drive through Yunnan province towards Kunming, most likely reaching the town of Mojiang or Yuxi en route.

We will either wild camp or stay in a local hotel en route.

Day 24: Shilin Stone Forest

This morning we will complete our drive to the incredible Shilin Stone Forest. We will have a free afternoon exploring the stunning and bizarre rock formations of the Stone Forest.

We will either wild camp near to the Shilin Stone Forest or stay in a local hotel tonight.

Estimated Drive Time - 3-4 hours.

Day 25: Kunming

Today we will drive to Kunming, the vibrant, modern capital of Yunnan province. We will have a free day to explore the city's sights.

In Kunming we will stay in a comfortable local hotel.

Estimated Drive Time - 2-3 hours.

Day 26: Kunming

Border information: if joining in Kunming, you will most likely enter China at Kunming Changshui International Airport.

Today will be a free day to explore the city of Kunming until the evening. There will be a group meeting today at 6:00pm - your leader will leave a note at reception telling you where this important meeting will take place.

In Kunming we will stay in a comfortable hotel.

Day 27-28: Dali

This morning we start out journey with a drive to the beautiful lakeside town of Dali. We will have a free afternoon to explore on arrival.

On the following day we will have a free day in Dali to enjoy the many optional activities available in the area, including taking a boat ride out on Lake Er Hai or taking the cable car up Cangtang Mountain.

In Dali we will stay in an excellent hostel in private or shared rooms.

Day 29: Ruili

Today we wil travel throuh Baoshan Country and reach the border town of Ruili. 

In Ruili we aim to stay in a local guesthouse.

Day 30-31: Hsipaw

Border information: exit China at Ruili, enter Myanmar at Muse.

Today we will cross the border into Myanmar and make our way to the laid-back Shan village of Hsipaw.

Estimated Drive Time - 6-7 hours.

On the following day we will have a free day for exploration of the area, and will hopefully have the opportunity to take a boat trip on the lake or head out on a day trek to the hill-tribes of the area.

In Hsipaw we will stay in a hotel.

Day 32: Pyin U Lwin

Today we will continue to the scenic hill town of Pyin U Lwin in the Shan highlands above Mandalay, where we will have a chance to explore the town and the beautiful botanical gardens.

In Pyin U Lwin we will camp overnight near the town.

Estimated Drive Time - 4 hours.

Day 33-35: Mandalay

Today we will have a free morning to further explore Pyin U Lwin, before our short drive to the enchanting and evocative former royal capital of Mandalay.

Estimated Drive Time -2 hours.

On our first full day here we will have a guided tour that includes a morning visit to Mandalay Hill, the world's largest book, the Golden Palace and the Mahamuni Pagoda, before finishing the day at the beautiful U Bin bridge in time for sunset.

On the following day we will have a second full day in Mandalay to freely explore the incredible city.

In Mandalay we will stay in a comfortable hotel.

Day 36: Monywa

This morning we will continue our journey to the town of Monywa, stopping en route to visit the Thanboddhay Pagoda and the Hpo Win Daung cave temples. 

In Monywa we will stay in a local hotel.

Estimated Drive Time - 6-7 hours (depending on the length of our visit to the pagoda and temples).

Day 37: Pakkoku

Today we make our way to the ancient town of Pakhan Gyi and the attractive town of Pakokku , where we board a boat to take us on a journey down the Ayeyarwaddy River to Bagan.

In Bagan we will stay in a local hotel.

Estimated Drive Time - 4 hours to Pakokku.

Day 38-39: Bagan

Bagan is situated on the banks of the Ayeyarwady (Irrawaddy) River and is home to the largest cluster of pagodas, Buddhist temples, stupas and ruins in the world - a place that has to be seen to be believed.

We will have 2 full days in Bagan, in which time we have a guided tour of the temple complexes and visit the 10th century old town of Bagan, including a visit to a local handicraft workshop. There will also be plenty of time for free exploration of the area.

Day 40: Kalaw

Today we will drive to the hill station town of Kalaw, where we will hopefully catch the lively market and explore the town.

In Kalaw we will camp outside the village.

Estimated Drive Time - 6-7 hours.

Day 41-43: Inle Lake

Today we have the opportunity for a day walk in the hills surrounding Kalaw, before returning in the afternoon for the short drive to the beautiful Inle Lake, a real highlight of a visit to Myanmar. The area is full of amazing floating gardens and can be explored by bike or on a long-tail boat.

Estimated Drive Time - 2 hours.

On the following day we will have a full day tour around Inle Lake by long-tail boat to the floating farms and markets.

On the following day we will have a free day to explore the area by bike, hike in the surrounding hills, or visit the local wineries and hot springs.

In Inle Lake we will stay in a local guesthouse.

Day 44: Naypyidaw

Today we will drive to the unique, bizarre and half-empty Myanmar capital of Naypyidaw, a city constructed in secret during the early 2000s. Here we will have the opportunity to explore the city in the truck.

In Naypyidaw we aim to stay in a local hotel.

Day 45: Yangon

Border information: if joining in Yangon, you will most likely enter Myanmar at Yangon International Airport (IATA code: RGN).

Today will be a free day to explore the city of Yangon and the Scott Market until the evening. There will be a group meeting today at 6:00pm - please do not be alarmed if there is no welcome note from your leader when you arrive as this is often a travel day for the crew, and they are likely to arrive during the afternoon.

Day 46: Yangon

Today we will have a guided tour of old Yangon, the Kandawgyi Lake, the Chaukhtatgyi Pagoda and the famous Shwedagon Pagoda.

Day 47: Mt Kyaiktiyo

This morning our journey from Yangon begins with a drive to one of Myanmar’s most important Buddhist pilgrimage shrines at the spectacular Mt Kyaiktiyo.

We take a local pick-up truck up the first two-thirds of the mountain, and then continue the final part of the ascent on foot along a steep and winding path. We end up on the top, next to the Golden Rock.

In Mt Kyaiktiyo we will stay in a local hotel.

Day 48: Hpa An

Today we will aim to visit the mushroom-shaped temple rock at Kyauk Kalap and the beautiful Kawt Ka Taung caves near Hpa An, before moving on to the city of Mawlamyine for the night.

In Mawlamyine we will stay in a local hotel.

Day 49: Dawei

Today we will head south following the beautiful Andaman coast, to the southern city of Dawei. If we have time we will visit the Thanbyuzayat Allied War Cemetery en route.

We will stay at a beachfront hotel on Maungmagan Beach (about 12 kilometres from Dawei).

Day 50: Dawei

Today we will have a free day at the the stunning Maungmagan beaches.

Day 51: Kanchanaburi

Border Information: exit Myanmar at Htee Kee, enter Thailand at Ban Nam Pu Ron.

Today we will cross into Thailand via the brand new border at Htee Kee, and drive to the town of Kanchanaburi.

In Kanchanaburi we will stay in a local guesthouse.

Day 52: Bangkok

We spend this morning exploring the Thailand-Burma Railway centre and the infamous Bridge over the River Kwai in Kanchanaburi. This afternoon we drive to Thailand's bustling capital of Bangkok, where we will have free time to explore and enjoy our final meal together!

In Bangkok we will stay in a comfortable, centrally-located hotel.

Day 53: Bangkok

Border information: if leaving in Bangkok, you will most likely exit Thailand from Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport (IATA code: BKK).

Today is the end day for passengers finishing their trip in Bangkok. Please note there is no accommodation included on the trip tonight - please contact the Dragoman Sales team if you are interested in booking extra nights of accommodation in order to fully explore and take part in some of the optional activities listed below.
