Friday (09 February): Rio Arrival & Welcome Briefing
Welcome to Rio! Today is an arrival day. To make your way to your accommodation you can take an optional airport transfer (for an additional cost) or make your way via taxi (not included).
Your accommodation is located in Lapa, Rio’s colourful bohemian centre, where all of Carnival’s major events and parties take place. Samba clubs, theatres, capoeira halls, old historical houses converted into trendy antique stores, funky bars, restaurants, cafes and of course the famous Lapa Arches! You can arrive when you wish, but check-in is from 2pm. Our crew will be on-hand waiting for you at the accommodation to show you your room, give you maps, tell you what you need to know and take you on an optional orientation walk around the area.
Later, we will meet at the lobby around 5:00pm for a group meeting where you`ll be given a schedule of all the events and meeting times and then the festivities will begin! You will receive a caipirinha and afterwards learn to perfect your samba moves in our group samba class. You can even get your face painted before heading out into the streets for our first night in Rio! Our guides will be there to escort you to best parties in town. It is officially the first night of Carnival - the atmosphere will be electric!
Tonight you will have the option to be taken to Av. Presidente Vargas to watch all the samba schools (and passengers who booked the Samba School Add-on) prepare and party. Have your cameras ready to get some awesome pictures. This will be a night you’ll never forget!
Inclusions: Orientation walk, welcome briefing (Caipirinhas and Samba Class included), partying with the samba schools on Av. Presidente Vargas accompanied by guide/s, night out in Rio accompanied by guide/s.
*Pre-Tour Night: Please note an optional night is available before the beginning of the tour for an additional cost. We highly recommend that you book an extra night, especially if you’ve travelled a long way to get here, to give you time to recover, settle in and visit more of Rio’s sites before Carnival.
*Airport Pick-Up: Please note an optional airport transfer to your accommodation can be scheduled for an additional cost.
*Shopping Note: Today is the day most shops and big markets will be open in the area. During Carnival it is customary to wear ‘fancy-dress’ costumes to all street parties; so if you haven’t packed any fancy dress items today is the day to go shopping. Our guides can tell you where to go.
*Samba School Add-On: This add-on must be booked and paid before arriving to Rio. You will need to give your costume size (universal small, medium or large) and European shoe size. For those who pre-booked a Samba School Costume, you’re going to be part of the Sambadrome Parade tonight! Your costumes will be delivered to your accommodation room. There will be plenty of time to get ready after our group meeting, caipirinhas and samba class. Once everyone is dressed and prepped, you will be guided to the meeting point on Avenue Presidente Vargas. This will be one to two hours before the school’s scheduled parade time.
(Please note that the costume you will provided with for the Samba School depends on the theme set by the school you will be dancing with. You could be anything from a clown, an animal or even food. You will surely see more experienced samba dancers in the parade wearing more elaborate and glamorous costumes. Nevertheless, being part of the parade will be a unique and fun experience!)
Saturday (10 February): Morning Bloco & Sunset Boat Party Cruise (B/L)
This morning, as with every morning, our guides will be down at breakfast to give you information and remind you of what’s on offer for today.
One of the biggest and best blocos in Rio - ‘Céu na Terra’ - traditionally performs every Saturday morning of Carnival in Santa Teresa. Therefore, our guides will accompany those who are keen to go!
Then this afternoon we will be walked down to Gloria Maria to have lunch and board our magnificent private schooner boat to spend the next 3-4 hours cruising around Rio’s spectacular Guanabara Bay! Returning just after sunset, we’ll have the opportunity to view the city in yet another light and from yet another angle… with fantastic views of Sugarloaf and Christ. On-board there will be bathrooms, music, dance-floor, chill-out area, nibbles, open bar for the first hour and then drinks for sale throughout the cruise.
After the boat cruise we will return to the accommodation and to get ready for another big night out in Rio. Our guides will be there to give you all the options on offer for the night ahead.
Inclusions: Breakfast, Bloco street party accompanied by guide/s, Lunch, Boat party cruise around Guanabara Bay (1h open bar), Night out in Rio accompanied by guide/s.
Sunday (11 February): Pre-Carnival Party & Sunday Sambadrome Parade (B/D)
After breakfast getting insider tips from your guide on what is best to do today you are free to spend the morning relaxing on the beach or take an optional tour for an additional cost. If you wish to go to the beach as a group, one of our guides will meet you in the lobby at 10am and take you on the metro (underground) to the best part of Ipanema and/or Leblon beach.
If you’re up for partying, our guides will accompany you to the most vibrant bloco street party happening in the city today!
Tonight our guides will escort you to the main event of the week: Sunday Night Parade at the Sambadrome!!! - When all the best of the best samba schools parade their outrageous floats and costumes down the runway, and we watch in awe from the stands above! We will meet in the lobby prior for included pre-drinks and another opportunity to get your face painted. Our professional photographer will be on-hand to capture all the action, so tonight is a good night to get dressed up in your best Carnival themed attire! Before arriving to Sambadrome we will stop at one of Rio’s famous Churrasco BBQ restaurants to enjoy dinner and provide our bodies with the necessary fuel to last dancing and cheering all night long.
We have Section 12-13 tickets located at the end of the runway, known to be the liveliest of all the sections with lots of fun, rowdy locals. There are no fixed seats, just concrete bleachers. Everyone stands and cheers as the samba schools arrive to the finish line! Another perk of this section is that you might get the opportunity to salvage an abandoned costume to wear later on as once the Samba School passes the finish line many dancers take off their costumes and leave them behind.
Alternatively you can upgrade to another sector for a closer view and a less rowdy crowd for an additional cost.
You’ll see that the local Cariocas really support their samba school (similar to supporting a football team!) with lots of singing and dancing. They know ALL the words to the ‘anthems’. It is a wonderful local experience and one that goes on until the wee hours of the morning!
Inclusions: Breakfast, Group trip to the beach, Bloco street party accompanied by guide/s, Sambadrome Parade Tickets Sectors 12-13 with group escort to and from accommodation with pre-drinks, face-painting and All-you-can-eat Brazilian Churrasco BBQ dinner.
*City Tour Note: Please note you can book an optional city tour for this morning for an additional cost.
*Sambadrome Sector Upgrade: If you wish to get closer to the parade and get a better view you have the option of purchasing an upgrade for an additional cost. You will still have a guide accompanying you if you choose to upgrade.
