The Yukon was firmly placed on the map after the discovery of gold on August 16th, 1896 which sparked a migration of over 100,000 prospectors to the Klondike region of the Yukon in Northwestern Canada between 1896 and 1899. When news of the Klondike Gold Rush, also called the Yukon Gold Rush, reached Seattle and San Francisco it sparked a massive influx of potential prospectors. The journey proved tough with only about 40,000 arriving. Naturally some made claims and became wealthy however, the clear majority left empty handed and many died. The Klondike Gold Rush ended in 1899 after gold was discovered in Nome (Alaska), prompting an exodus from the Klondike. With the prospectors long departed, you'll escape into the Yukon wilderness without the herds. The stunning scenery and tough environment will help paint a picture of what prospectors went through upon arriving to seek their fortune. Your canoe trip starts with a transfer to the legendary Yukon River - meaning `Great River'. The river travels more than 3,000km from its source south of Whitehorse, to the Bering Sea. During the next seven wonderful days, you'll paddle over 300km on this great river to roam the Yukon wilderness. Your first day of paddling brings you to Lake Laberge which requires some shoreline paddling. The reward is some wonderful paddling along the 30 mile section of the river, a narrow, winding stretch that provides incredible scenery, excellent fishing (optional permits purchased prior to departure) and brings you to some interesting historical sites, including the old trading post of Hootalinqua and RNWMP outpost. As you travel through the wilderness, you'll reach the confluences of the Teslin and Big Salmon River where wildlife, including Black Bear and moose are often spotted along the shorelines.
